Eve’s Tent Peg

She sent her hand to the tent peg
and her right hand to the workmen’s mallet;
she struck Sisera;
she crushed his head;
she shattered and pierced his temple.

So may all your enemies perish, O LORD!
But your friends be like the sun as he rises in his might.”
And the land had rest for forty years.
(Judges 5:26,31 ESV)

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
(Romans 16:20)

Jael was a faithful Eve who deceived the serpent (Sisera’s name means serpent) and crushed his head with a tent peg. Now that is enmity with the serpent’s seed! The Church, the daughter of Zion, the Bride of the Last Adam, is also called to be a faithful Eve, because our Head was a faithful Adam. Indeed, the Church of the First Century was faithful where Eve was not, and the God of peace did crush the serpent of those who were no “sons of Abraham” but rather “sons of [their] father the devil.”

We should emulate their faith, for is it not our faith that overcomes the world? And remember, if you feel that the state of the Church is deplorable, that “if the first-fruits are holy, the whole batch is holy” (cf. Romans 11:6 and Romans 8:23) and God is not done with us yet!

    The story of Jael is one of my favorite! I’m glad you took time to mention her because I feel that her story is one often overlooked.
