John 3:5-8

Jesus answered, “Truly, Truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind (Spirit) blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

-John 3:5-8 (ESV)

We are so quick to think that we understand what a text is saying, especially one that is so great as a battering ram for TULIP. The Spirit does blow where He wills. God is free in regeneration and salvation. What a precious truth! But look at the last line and think of the context. The man who is born of the Spirit is spirit. You hear him and yet you don’t know where He came from and where he is going. That is a main theme of John for the life of Jesus and His effect on those around Him. He just slips through the crowd at the last second when they are gonna stone him. He makes it clear He has come from the Father and He is going to the Father, yet the Jews did not know their father Abraham or Father God. I think there is much to be said for this passage.
